Clean Energy
Natural Gas
Natural gas is part of the solution to America’s energy needs. 90% of all natural gas is produced in North America and it is transported via existing natural gas pipelines to the user. If we use natural gas instead of other fuels we will be cleaner, more efficient and import less foreign oil.
Currently, more than two-thirds of American new homes are heated with clean burning natural gas. Natural gas is replacing oil and gasoline-powered energy wherever possible, the MBTA now runs over 350 natural gas-powered buses. In the U.S., more than 1,300 natural gas filling stations have already been built, as many large cities switch their public transportation fleets to cleaner fuels.
Brockton Clean Energy
Brockton Clean Energy has been approved by the appropriate state authorities, including the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office and the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board, which motioned 8-0 in favor of this development. The Project will be one of the cleanest and most efficient natural gas generation facilities ever to be permitted and constructed in the state of Massachusetts.
Currently there are many natural gas plants located throughout Massachusetts that supply needed capacity to the grid. Plants are located in Everett, Weymouth, Cambridge, Dighton, Taunton, Braintree, Lowell, Peabody, and on MIT’s campus.
Consumer demand increases by about 1% per year in New England (or 300MW each year) and about 200MW of generation is phased out or retired each year (75% of the region’s generation capacity is more than 30 years old). While we are striving to meet the Massachusetts long-term energy policy goals – 2,000MW of renewable capacity by 2020 – we must also renew our aging generation fleet with more efficient and cleaner solutions.
